How to Sew Your Dragon

Dragons from How To Train Your Dragon franchise.

Name of this project of mine might be confusing. This page is not a tutorial showing or explaining how to sew dragons the way I do it. It's nothing more than a reference to the title of the movie that my dragons come from, which is "How to Train Your Dragon."

History

The project begun in 2012, which is when I first watched the movie that had immediately become the favorite movie of mine, so far unbeaten. Until that time, sewing had been but an occasional activity of mine, and my skills were not that advanced.

First dragon to be sewn was obviously Toothless the Night Fury, who is the main dragon character of the movie, widely adored by nearly all who've watched "How to Train Your Dragon". I have watched the movie a lot of times, and later on I have visited a lot of websites and studied a lot of pictures and graphics presenting the Night Fury. I found the shape of the dragon so perfect and so inspiring that I had to give it a try in the handicrafts I've been into. Of course, I have also loved Toothless' wings, which I had struggled to draw on a paper for a very long time.
Another thing, coming directly from the kid part of my personality, was that I'd dreamed of having a Toothless plushie on my own, a plushie I could cuddle and play with. Having searched the Internet, just as I'd expected, I'd found all toys offered by more and less official stores either too expensive, too hard to get, or, in most (if not all) cases, too little resembling the original Toothless. That brought me to try to make a plushie by myself.

So I did. The first attempt of Toothless was relatively small, and it would've been okay if not for the wings which were too small and stiffed with a plastic wire. After some time I decided I could do much better than that, and a new version of Toothless was thus made. This one took a really long time to make, mainly due to its wings which I have made all by hand back in the day. The second big struggle was head, a right shape of which was really difficult to obtain. The final effect was the Toothless which you can see in the first picture of "List of the Dragons" section below.

Originally, I wasn't thinking of opening the project of sewing every single one of the dragons from the series. In "How to Train Your Dragon" there were only six species shown, and Toothless was without any doubt the prettiest. It was not until "DreamWorks Dragons: Riders of Berk" series was released, introducing dozens of new dragons, when I thought that this whole variety of species is a wonderful opportunity to test, improve, and make use of my sewing skills.

The next few dragons to be made within next two years were Skrill, Monstrous Nightmare, Changewing, Hideous Zippleback, and Typhoomerang. For a time there were only these, and not until later on have I decided to take the challenge and sew every single species appearing in the movies and the series.

Perhaps the greatest challenge of mine was Boneknapper, which took way more than a year to complete. It's not that it took such a long time, it's that I begun working on it, then got demoted, and after a long time decided to come back to it. What took the longest amount of time were the bones, made from a kind of paper-mache. I had to picture the dragon and decide which bones to make, how many of them, and what size. They would then take couple days to dry off before I could attach them to the dragon's body. If I were making the Boneknapper without any demotion holidays, I estimate it would take about two weeks - which, at least in my case, is super long, taken that an average dragon takes up to three, four days to make.

Eventually I have given up the project, since the rate of new species introduced to the movies and series became so high that I couldn't catch up with it anymore. The project is currently abandoned because of the airplanes, which have become much closer to what I'm up to in my life. This doesn't mean, however, that I'm not going to come back to dragons someday - I'm already planning to make some of "Race to the Edge" species which I have particularly liked.

  9. These are amazing, except I think the fireworks and terrible terror look like they're made of something that looks kinda like Legos to me. I've also been trying to crochet a whispering death but eventually want all of these. To me, his tail keeps slowly getting bigger, which is why I haven't been able to do it. I also think the scauldron looks a bit off but the rest are amazing. I've also thought about making the night lights, whichrwhich are toothless's and the light fury's children from I think the end of the second movie.
